The Hour Pillar changes every two hours (one Chinese double-hour, or 时辰). So in theory, you have a 2-hour window before the Hour Pillar shifts.
But in practice, precision matters more near the boundaries. If you were born at 1:58 PM, and the Pillar changes at 2:00 PM, even a 5-minute error could put you in the wrong Hour Pillar.
Additionally, True Solar Time (真太阳时) adjustment based on longitude can shift your effective birth time by up to an hour from clock time. Someone born at 1:30 PM in western China might have a True Solar Time of 12:30 PM — a different Hour Pillar entirely.
For best results, try to confirm your birth time within a 15-minute window, and use a system that applies True Solar Time correction.
